Glacier course Austre Okstindbreen

This course takes place on one of Norway's oldest glaciers, Okstindbreen. At the foot of Northern Norway's highest mountain, everything is set for educational days.

If you want to learn the basics to safely navigate glaciers during the summer, this is the right course for you. Over 3 days, we will practice crampon techniques, rope team routines, and glacier navigation trip planning. If weather permits, we will attempt to summit Oksskolten (1916masl) on the final day.

Accommodations are in the area, not far from Kjensvasshytta, which is accessible by car in the summer.

For: Those in reasonably good physical condition who want to learn how to navigate glaciers.

Group: 3-6 participants per guide. Requires a minimum of 3 participants to proceed.

Price: 4500 NOK per person.

Participants are responsible for covering their own expenses related to transportation, accommodation and food.

Practical information 

Meeting Point

We gather the evening before the course starts at the agreed meeting point.

Accommodation

We establish a tent camp not far from the road on a flat and nice moraine ridge. If desired, accommodation can be booked at the DNT cabin Kjennsvasshytta, which is 2 km from the tent camp.

Food

Participants arrange their own food for the course.

Navigating glaciers in midsummer can be quite contrasting, so pack what's listed in the equipment list; it's better to have a little too much clothing.

  • Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support

  • 120cm slings, 2 pieces

All glacier equipment can be rented from Bodø Fjellføring for 600 NOK, except for hiking boots.

  • 5L water jug is handy

Bodø Fjellføring provides ropes and any other equipment needed to complete the course.
